Narail Sadar Upazila is located on the banks of Chitra River in Barisal upazila of three upazilas of Narail district. Sadar upazila consists of 13 union parishads and 1 municipality in the district headquarter area of 381 sq km. Mohammadpur and Shalikha upazilas of Magura district on the north, Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore district, Lohagarha upazila of Narail district, Bagherpara upazila of Jessore district on the west. In order to maintain law and order for administrative reasons, Narail Subdivision Sadar was formed in 1861. This upazila was established in West Mohishkhola Mouza. After the formation of Narail district in 1984, Narail Sadar Upazila was inaugurated in the same year. Mr. Mir Shamsul Haque, the first officer of the upazila, was appointed as the executive officer.
Historically, Narail Sadar Upazila is an ancient township. This region has a glorious past history in history, heritage, literature, culture and movement. The province of Bengal, which was named as Baghyribhuti during Bengal's Pal and Sena kings, was the capital of Sanknachat or Sheikhhati under Narail Sadar upazila. The palatial house of zamindars of the famous Narail founded during the British rule was located in Narail Mouza of sadar upazila. The tebhaga movement was initiated in this upazila under the leadership of prominent leaders such as Hemant Sarkar, Modhacharan Munshi, Noor Jalal, Comrite Amal Sen, Sworna Biswas, Syed Nowsher Ali, and son of sadar upazila. In 1971, the upazila was liberated on 10 December after fighting against the Pak army. Shaheed Birshreshtha Nance Naik Noor Mohammad was born in the village of Mohishkhola of Chandibor Union under Narail Sadar upazila. Born in Mashimdia of sadar upazila, international artiste painter S M Sultan Narail proudly Besides, Kaviyal Bijoy Sarkar, eminent Moslem Uddin, among others, are the children of this upazila.
