Narail Sadar Upazila is located on the bank of Chitra River, the largest upazilas of three upazilas of Narail district. Sadar upazila consists of 13 union parishads and 1 municipality in the district headquarter located 381.75 sq km. Mohammadpur and Shalikha upazilas of Magura district on the north of this upazila; Abhaynagar Upazila of Jessore district on the south; Lohagara upazila of Narail district on the east; Baghparpara is located in the west of Jessore district.
For administrative reasons, Narail subdivision of Narail was established in 1861 in West Mahishkhola Mauja in the upazila. After the formation of Narail district in 1984, Narail Sadar Upazila was inaugurated in the same year. Mr. Mir Shamsul Haque, the first officer of the upazila, was appointed as the executive officer.
Historically, Narail Sadar Upazila is an ancient township. This region has a glorious history in history-heritage-literature-culture and movement. The province of Bengal, which was named as Baghyribhuti during Bengal's Pal and Sena kings, was the capital of Sanknachat or Sheikhhati under Narail Sadar upazila. The palatial house of zamindars of the famous Narail founded during the British rule was located in Narail Mouza of Narail Sadar upazila. The tebhaga movement was initiated in this upazila and significant leaders of this movement such as Hemant Sarkar, Modakal Munshi, Noor Jalal, Comrade Amal Sen, Sworna Biswas, Syed Nowsher Ali, Narail Sadar Upazila, the children of Narail. In 1971, the upazila was liberated on 10 December after fighting against the Pak army. Shaheed Birshreshtha Nance Naik Noor Mohammad was born in the village of Mohishkhola of Chandibor Union under Narail Sadar upazila. Born in Machimadia of sadar upazila, international artists such as SM Sultan Narail, and the pride of Bangladesh. Besides, Kaviyal Bijoy Sarkar, eminent Moslem Uddin, Narail Express-noted poisoned cricketer Mashrafe-Bin-Mortuza, etc. are the children of this upazila.
